Where to Shop and What to Buy in Vietnam

Many tourists can’t help but throw themselves head-first into shopping while in Vietnam. Why? Probably the variety of quality goods and the tempting prices have a lot to do with it. Many low-budget travelers considered Vietnam a heavenly place because in many shopping situations they can bargain the prices down to as much as a third of the original cost. The list of Vietnamese bargains is seemingly endless and features bespoke tailoring and the national dress, the ‘ao dai’ from high-quality silk and many other types of material and textiles while many shoppers cannot get enough of the local handicraft, art and jewelry.

The Best Places to Shopping in Saigon

Shopping in Ho Chi Minh is truly one of the highlights of this fascinating city. New shopping malls are springing up all over downtown Saigon, bringing with them international fashion brands to please the most demanding of fashion connoisseurs, but it is the variety of shopping experiences and one-off items that most excite us about shopping in Ho Chi Minh.
Boutique fashion is more prominent here than almost anywhere else in Southeast Asia, where bespoke items can be bought at a fraction of what they cost elsewhere. Markets in Ho Chi Minh are also highly recommended as they still play a central role in the daily lives of locals and visitors – truly a shopping experience you won’t forget quickly.

Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 is a great place to buy local handicrafts, branded goods, Vietnamese art and other souvenirs. Here, you’ll find eating stalls inside the market where you can get a taste of hawker-style Vietnamese cuisine or simply cool off with a cold drink when the bargaining becomes too much.
The market is big, difficult to navigate at times and certainly best avoided during the hottest part of the day but all the same its well worth a look. When night falls, restaurants around the perimeter of the market open their doors creating a vibrant street side scene filling the air with the scents of wok-fried noodles, barbecued fish and meats. One of Saigon’s oldest landmarks, Ben Thanh offers a great atmosphere that is absolutely authentically Vietnamese.
Save your appetite and head to Ben Thanh Market in the evening where you can be served some real street style local food at one of the 20 or so eateries that surround the market building. Chefs will cook in front of you with an endless array of cuisine choices including vegetarian noodles, fresh seafood, crispy rice pancakes and steamed cakes. You will be in great local company as most of the places thrive with locals enjoying a bite to eat and a quick drink on their way home from work.
For shopping heaven head to the market preferably early morning to pick up some bargains including lacquer ware, bamboo goods, arts and crafts. Also on sale are clothes, textiles, luggage, watches and an assortment of electronic goods. Spices, nuts and local fruits heavily scent the air which is also filled with the chatter of tourists and locals haggling for bargains. Do note however that some items will be strictly fixed price.

Ben Thanh Market is situated in District 1 in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City at the intersection of Le Loi, Ham Ngh, Tan Hung and Le Lai streets. Shops close late afternoon with shopping best done in the morning before the heat of the day hits.
The market is one of Ho Chi Minh’s most famous landmarks and is known by all taxi drivers, although if you are staying downtown check first to see if you can walk to it from your hotel as it’s very centrally located.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 6:00 –24:00

Vincom Center

With more than 250 shops, Vincom Center is Ho Chi Minh City’s biggest shopping mall – so big in fact, that they have separated it into two separate buildings just across the street from each other. Vincom Center A is housed in a delightful French styled period building connected to The Continent Hotel, while Vincom Center B is just behind it, occupying the first five storeys of a modern, glass-fronted skyscraper. If you are looking for international products then this should be your first stop as this is where most international luxury brands have their flagship stores, right in the tourist heart of the city. There are also some convenient restaurants and cafes serving food from most regions including many international franchises.

Vincom Center A

Vincom Cenre A is the smaller and prettier one, with a beautiful, baroque styled facade and nothing but the top brands in world fashion pulling customers in with inventive window displays: think Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Hermes. As well as premium fashion, there are a limited number of electronics retailers and bespoke home decor shops on the higher floors. On the basement floor there is a children’s playpen called Kids Yard and just next door, an excellent Paris Baguette bakery that sells a wide range of goods and some of the most delicious baguettes in Ho Chi Minh.

Vincom Center B

Just a quick hop across Dong Khoi Street is Vincom Center B. From the exterior, it couldn’t look more different. Instead of ornate French arches, there is a sheer glass frontage stretching up 26 storeys. However, once inside the type of shopping is much the same, with Jimmy Choo, DKNY, Charles & Keith and a host of jewellery and perfume shops. This shopping mall is a little easier to navigate as it is built around a central bank of elevators so shoppers can see what is on the floors above and below. On the basement floor of Vincom B there is an excellent food court with Buds Ice Cream, Carl’s Jr burgers, Seoul Garden, and many other offerings from across the world.

Vincom Center A: 171 Dong Khoi, District 1
Vincom Center B: 72 Le Thanh Ton Street, District 1

Binh Tay Market (Cholon Chinatown Market)

Binh Tay Market, constructed by the French in the 1880s, is located in the centre of Vietnam’s largest Chinatown district. Unlike Ben Thanh Market in District 1, this market mainly serves the local population with its extensive range of fresh fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat and seafood from regions across Vietnam.
Also known as Cholon Chinatown Market, Binh Tay Market occupies a two-storey building along Thap Moui Street. Travellers can also find an assortment of handicrafts, lacquerware, and textiles that are sold in bulk, though goods are not varied compared to other (more touristy) markets in downtown Hanoi. Along with the interesting historical and cultural aspect of Cholon, Binh Tay Market is great for experiencing the local lifestyle and sampling unique Vietnamese-Chinese delicacies.
A popular breakfast spot amongst locals, there are plenty of food stalls selling Vietnamese staples in the market including pho noodles, goi cuon (spring rolls), and com tam (broken rice) as well as Chinese-influenced delicacies such as banh bao, which are steamed buns filled with pork or chicken, onions, eggs, mushrooms, and vegetables. A courtyard is set the middle of the marketplace, where you can find a stone altar commemorating Guangdong-born philanthropist Quach Dam.
Binh Tay Market is accessible within a 15-minute xe om (motorcycle taxi) ride from downtown Ho Chi Minh City. The best time to visit is in the morning as that’s when the locals come for breakfast and shop for fresh produce and household supplies.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 08:00 – 17:00
  • Address: 57A Thap Moui, District 6, Ho Chi Minh City

Saigon Square

Anyone looking for bargains while in Saigon should head to Saigon Square on the corner of Nam Kỳ Khởi and Le Loi in District 1. This shopping arcade is packed with stalls on two levels selling fashion, accessories and jewellery – be aware of forgeries though, and remember the old adage that if it seems too good to be true it probably is. Even though it’s always bustling with shoppers, Saigon Square is air conditioned and under cover so it is far more pleasant than shopping in the nearby Ben Thanh Market and it’s generally accepted that prices are far better here.
Shops and stalls in Saigon Square are seemingly placed haphazardly around the mall so the best thing to do is just stroll along the aisles looking for something that takes your fancy. Bargaining is expected here and as it is so close to the tourist heart of Ho Chi Minh, prices are initially inflated. If there is something you have your eye on, shop around and enquire about prices as it is fairly easy to find different shops selling similar items. Just consider what you would be willing to pay for an item and bargain accordingly.
As well as the main branch on Le Loi Street, there is a second branch at Tôn Đức Thắng, close to the river. The setup is much the same here, although it is smaller and a little more dated. It must be said that male fashion is a little underrepresented at both Saigon Square Shopping Malls but for ladies discount fashion in Ho Chi Minh, Saigon Square should be your first destination.

  • Opening Hours: 08:00 – 22:00
  • Location: Corner of Nam Kỳ Khởi and Le Loi in District 1

Diamond Plaza

Diamond Plaza is a beautifully renovated department store in a Ho Chi Minh City surrounded by many of the city’s most attractive sites, such as Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Post Office, and the April 30th Park – a charming open space with tall trees and greenery. The department store is housed in a charming colonial-looking building, with an attractive glass-fronted office block rising up into the sky just behind the shopping centre. There are many reasons to visit Diamond Plaza, not least for the world class shopping: cosmetics, perfumes, watches and jewellery occupy the first floor, both men’s and women’ wear on the second, including formal attire and most major sporting brands, and on the third floor there is a convenient collection of electronic products and mobile phones.
The other main reason for choosing to visit Diamond Plaza is the family entertainment options such as the large bowling alley and video arcade on the fourth floor, and the Diamond Cinema on the 13th floor.
Superbowl Vietnam is modern and colourful with all the flashing lights and loud clatter of pins common in bowling alleys across the world. The 32 lanes at Diamond Superbowl ensure there is almost always an alley available, but it might be worth booking on weekend evenings. Prices per hour of bowling range significantly from weekday mornings (200,000 VND) to weekends after 19:00 (375,000 VND).
Diamond Cinema shows all the major Hollywood blockbusters and although it only has six screens, it’s a very convenient location if you are looking for a cinema in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh. Movies are played in English with Vietnamese subtitles and prices are generally much lower than in most western countries. A single ticket will cost around 90,000 VND ($4 US).

  • Opening Hours: 09:30 – 22:30 (Superbowl and Cinema open until 01:00)
  • Address: 34 Le Duan Street, District 1

An Dong Market (Craft Market)

An Dong Market Ho Chi Minh houses a variety of fashion wholesalers and handicrafts stalls. Located in District 5, this indoor market opens daily from 08:00 until 14:00. Divided into four levels, fashion enthusiasts can find an extensive collection of clothing, textiles, shoes, handbags, and accessories on the first two floors. The top floor is dedicated to quality handicrafts and trinkets made by skilled local artisans.

What to Buy at An Dong Market Ho Chi Minh City

Some of the most popular goods at An Dong Market include woodwork, lacquerware, and knitwear. You can also find jewellery made with gemstones such as amethyst and jade, but it can be hard to confirm its authenticity, so handicrafts are safer options if you’re unsure.
The ground floor of the market has several stalls selling bulk foods, traditional snacks, and desserts for less than US$1. There’s also a food court where you can enjoy dishes such as pho, banh xeo (savoury crepes), goi cuon (spring rolls), and mi quang (turmeric noodles) throughout the day.
Even though items sold here are much cheaper than Ho Chi Minh City’s more renowned markets, you can still haggle for lower prices. Start at about 50% lower, then bargain with the vendor until you’ve reached an agreed price.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 08:00 – 14:00
  • Location: An Duong Vuong Street, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City

The Best Places to Shopping in Hanoi

Shopping in Hanoi is most famed for its traditional markets and narrow shophouses, but there are a growing number of flash boutiques and shopping malls offering a wide range of international brands, as well as dining and entertainment options. The best thing about shopping in Hanoi is that you can do it all on foot, with many streets dedicated to specific trades.
This is particularly true in the Old Quarter, where Silk Street and Silver Street still retain their particular trades after hundreds of years. Whether you are looking for gimmicky souvenirs such as Vietnamese farming hats or a hand-made silk evening gown, we have compiled a list of great places to shop in Hanoi.

Hang Gai Street (Silk Street)

Hang Gai Street is the best place in Hanoi to shop for high quality, fashionable silk materials, traditional Vietnamese apparel, and home furnishings. Also known as Silk Street, the entirety of this 300 metre-long street is lined with fashion boutiques and local tailor shops that have been operating for decades, where you can also order personally tailored suits and dresses that are made to measure.
Set on the edge of Hanoi’s Old Quarter near Hoan Kiem Lake, Silk Street is renowned for its quality and choice of craftsmen though two of our absolute favourites on Hang Gai Street are Khai Silk and Tan My Design as both stores offer ready-to-wear pieces – perfect if you’re too pressed for time to get a tailor-made outfit during your holiday in Hanoi. Suits can be ready within 24 hours, though it’s best to allow more time for a second fitting to make sure that your outfit is perfectly tailored.
Most stores in Hang Gai Street accept payment via credit cards and it pays to go to a better quality store and avoid the market street traders to guarantee the best quality silk. As with most retail outlets all over Vietnam, bargaining is also highly encouraged to get a decent price – start at 50% off the asking price and pay no more than 70%.
Aside from boutiques and tailor shops, Hang Gai Street also hosts a number of souvenir shops selling notebooks, lamps and postcards as well as prominent art galleries such as Thang Long Art Gallery and Green Palm Gallery.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 09:00 – 20:00
  • Address: Hang Gai Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Hanoi Weekend Night Market

Held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Hanoi Weekend Night Market is a busy, bustling gathering of roadside stalls and local food vendors that brings huge crowds of locals and tourists. It runs through the Old Quarter district from 19:00 onwards, starting from Hang Dao Street and running north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market.
Pedestrian streets and historical sites within the area are illuminated with decorative lights, making this a popular spot for travelling photographers. Shopping-wise, the fashion items on sale won’t turn many head as you will find the usual array of inexpensive t-shirts, handicrafts, accessories, shoes, sunglasses and souvenirs at Hanoi Weekend Night Market. However, the overall environment is very lively and bargaining is a way of life here – a good start is to offer about 75 per cent off the opening price.
With prices starting at VND 15,000, visitors can also find plenty of iconic Hanoi dishes while strolling through the busy night market, including bun thang (rice vermicelli soup with shredded chicken, fried egg, and pork), La Vong grilled fish, pho (noodle soup with beef or chicken), banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), and bun cha (rice noodles served with grilled pork).
Hanoi Weekend Night Market showcases cultural performances, where locals in traditional costumes play traditional Vietnamese music as well as classical tunes. As with all busy markets, be aware of your belongings and keep your wits about you as the throng of motorbikes and people can be intense.

  • Opening Hours: Friday – Sunday 19:00 – 23:00
  • Address: Hang Dao Street, Old Quarter, Hanoi

Dong Xuan Market

Established in 1889, Dong Xuan Market is housed within a four-storey Soviet-style building on the northern edge of Hanoi Old Quarter. It’s also known as Hanoi’s largest indoor market, offering a wide range of goods such as fresh produce, souvenirs, accessories and clothing, as well as electronic and household appliances.
Similar to most markets in Southeast Asia, Dong Xuan Market has a bustling wet market section on the ground floor, where locals shop for seafood, meat, and vegetables while the back section sells an array of pets (cats, dogs, and fish) and fresh flowers from all across Vietnam. If you’re looking to shop for souvenirs, head to the upper levels, where you can find numerous stalls selling tee shirts, fabrics, school uniforms, handbags, handicrafts, all of which are sold at wholesale prices.
There’s also a massive dining area within Dong Xuan Market, with food vendors selling Vietnamese coffee and exotic local dishes for as low as VND 15,000. Highly recommended dishes include tiet canh (duck blood soup), fried frog, bun cha (marinated grilled pork served with noodles), and banh cuon (rolled cake).
Surrounding Dong Xuan Market are many more shops where you can purchase traditional Dong Ho drawings, Bat Trang ceramics, Binh Da embroideries and laces, and sand paintings. Within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Xuan Market is a must-visit if you’re looking to experience the local lifestyle (you might even end up leaving with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat).

Hang Bac Street (Silver Street)

Hang Bac Street has been synonymous with jewellery (‘Bac’ means silver in Vietnamese) for hundreds of years, and this small, atmospheric street still retains many small outlets of jewellers selling rings, necklaces and many types of inexpensive fashion pieces. There isn’t one particular shop to check out; instead, take a wander from one end to the other and check out the jewellers, handicrafts and propaganda poster shops that are dotted along the street. To reach Hang Bac, start from the Water Puppet Theatre on the northern side of Hoan Kiem Lake and walk up Hang Be Street until you come to a T-junction.

It is very popular with the sophisticated set of Hanoi’s middleclass and foreign expat community. In particular, Things of Substance is a lovely Australian-run shop selling Vietnamese-style fashion and fabrics in Western sizes, and Mu Accessories selling fashion and apparel items in a range of bold colours are both lovely boutiques.

Hang Da Market

Hang Da Market, located in the heart of Hanoi’s central business district, is a three-storey shopping mall that houses an electic array of stalls. Smaller than Dong Xuan and offering a more select product range, this is the place to come for imported wine, flowers, second-hand clothes and fabrics.
The outside of the building is also very picturesque with its white multi-perforated façade and it’s expected that the whole interior may one day change from market stalls to boutique outlets. Hang Da Market  is a great place to pick up one-off clothing items including skirts, dresses and coats and some of the best buys are stylish second-hand clothes which are pretty much all in perfect condition.
The market is best visited first thing in the morning when the traders are unpacking for the day and best avoided over weekends or during the midday heat. Take a break when you shop on the first floor where you can buy some freshly cooked Vietnamese snacks.
Bargaining is not only advised but absolutely expected when shopping at Hang Da. As a rule, start at around 50% of the starting price but do not accept any lower than 25%. Hang Da is located on 1 Pho Hang Da at the intersection with Yen Thai. There is also a large shop lined with bamboo cages which are filled with exotic birds on the north corner where Hang Da meets Hang Dieu, which is also worth a look.
The area was once the main stretch for pipe and tobacco sellers so you keep an eye out for the remaining stores dating back aeons located just north on Hand Dieu Street. Don’t forget to take a camera as Hang Da is worth a visit just to capture the elegant architecture of the market building.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 05:00 – 17:00

The Best Places to Shopping in Danang
Da Nang’s shopping scene may pale in comparison than its neighbour, Hoi An, but travellers can still find a handful of prominent shopping malls and local markets within the city centre that are worth spending an afternoon. One of the most popular markets in this bustling coastal town is Han Market, which had been serving the locals since the French occupancy in the 1940s. There are hundreds of stalls selling local handicrafts, tee shirts, and prepacked food items such as Ly Son garlic, rice crackers, and dried squid at attractive prices.
If you prefer to shop for gifts in a more comfortable setting, then Lotte Mart Da Nang and Vinh Trung Plaza are our top picks. Da Nang is also easily explored on foot as the majority of shopping venues are set within close proximity to the city’s prominent landmarks and museums. Read for our helpful guide on where to shop and what to buy in Da Nang.

Con Market

Con Market is a prominent shopping venue in Da Nang City Centre where you can find over 2,000 stalls selling an array of handicrafts, apparel, and accessories at wholesale prices. Also known as Da Nang Commercial Centre, it is widely regarded as the coastal city’s largest and busiest wholesale shopping venue.
Built atop a highland in the city centre during the 1940s, Con Market was the focal point for farmers and fishermen from Vietnam’s rural districts such as Que Son, Dai Loc, and Thang Binh looking to sell fresh vegetables, seafood, and poultry. Following a renovation in 1984, it is now set within a three-storey building along Ong Ich Khiem Street.
You can find fresh produce, dried goods, coffee beans and plenty of food stalls on the ground floor while the upper level hosts handicrafts and t-shirts vendors as well as tailor services. While goods sold here are considerably cheaper than most markets in Vietnam, you can still bargain for lower prices – ask about 50 per cent to 70 per cent off the retail prices.
There’s also a wide range of cheap and authentic Vietnamese dishes available, including banh mi (Vietnamese-style baguette), goi cuon (spring rolls), banh xeo (crispy pancake), and mi quang (Vietnamese turmeric noodles). You can expect to pay about VND 30,000 for a filling meal at Con Market.
Con Market is a 10-minute taxi ride from Da Nang International Market, and is just across the street of Vinh Trung Plaza. Open daily from 08:00 onwards, the market is mostly frequented by locals, especially during evenings and public holidays such as the Tet Festival.

It’s very much like a miniature version of Ben Thanh Market central market in Ho Chi Minh City, and even if you aren’t necessarily looking to buy anything it still offers a fascinating glimpse into local life in Da Nang.
Han Market’s ground level is where locals shop for fresh vegetables, seafood, and butchered meat in the early morning. There are also numerous fruit stalls set in front of the market, where you can purchase tropical fruits such as bananas, mangoes, durian, and jackfruit. Accessible within a four-minute walk from Da Nang Cathedral, Han Market is open every day, but gets especially packed between 06:00 and 11:00 and 16:00 onwards.

The Best Places to Shopping in Hoian

Hoi An Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site.Hoi An has no airport, and no train station either. The only way to get there is by road. You can hire a taxi from the neighbouring city of Da Nang, which does have an airport with daily flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other large Vietnamese cities. There’s also a train station in Da Nang, and bus services are plentiful. We have a wide selection of hotels for you to choose from in both Cua Dai Beach and Hoi An City, whatever suits your pocket and style.

Hoi An Central Market

Sharpen your bargaining skills and head south east to Hoi An Central Market, one of Vietnam’s best, offering an unmissable shopping experience. Rich in the smell of fragrant herbs and spices and the vibrant colours of Vietnamese silk, delve deep and you are guaranteed a bargain. Prices tend to be more inflated at the stalls closest to the entrance so head right in for the best buys.
There is a vast array of foodstuff for sale including spices such as saffron and cinnamon which are superb purchases as are the exotic fresh fruit and vegetables on display. Due to its riverside location there is also a huge selection of fresh fish available.
The marketplace is renowned for its tailors who have a section of the market all to themselves. Fine silk tailoring is cheaper here than anywhere else in Hoi An with garment makers running up a dress, shirt, jacket or full suit usually within 24 hours. Souvenir and local handicraft hunters will also find plenty to browse through at the Central Market.
Resting on the banks of the Thu Bon River, bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists so its best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy, nevertheless it’s certainly a sight not to be missed.
Inside the market there are also plenty of live ducks and chickens tied together and ready for sale alongside row upon row of Vietnamese cooking ingredients. The smell can get quite strong as the day heats up and the market will also become a lot busier and louder as the day progresses. If you want to avoid this, then head to the east side and the large shed type building which houses the tailors and all manner of Asian silk and textiles.

  • Location: Nguyen Hue and Tran Phu on the Thu Bon River
  • Remarks: It’s a good idea to wear closed shoes as the floor in the market can get damp and sticky, especially if you are visiting the fish section.

The Best Places to Shopping in Hue

Hue’s shopping scene consists mostly of local markets, art galleries, tailor shops, and boutiques. One of the best cities in Vietnam to purchase authentic handicrafts, a must-buy item here is the Vietnamese nón lá or conical-shaped hat made by woven palm leaves. The hat has been around almost as long as the country and is worn by men and women everywhere. In Hue especially, the hat makers insert poems into the weaves and the poem can only be seen when the hat is held up to the sunlight, making it even more special.
The city’s local markets are great for experiencing the local lifestyle and sampling Hue dishes. There are also several non-profit organisations and fair-trade outlets where visitors can learn how to made simple handicrafts in workshops as mementos of their holiday in Hue. If you’re unsure about what to buy for loved ones back home, this guide includes some of our favourite places to shop in Hue.

Dong Ba Market

Dong Ba Market is the oldest of its kind in Hue, with hundreds of stalls selling household items, handicrafts, clothing and fresh produce at affordable prices. Located on Tran Hung Dao Street, it occupies a large grey building along the northern bank of Perfume River. Look out for the large red signage that says ‘Cho Dong Ba’ (which means Dong Ba Market in Vietnamese). The market opens as early as 03:00 to cater to local marketgoers looking to purchase fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables.
Dong Ba Market spans almost 16,000 square metres, with several sections dedicated to fruits, seafood, clothing, meat, and handicrafts. However, many stalls aren’t arranged in an orderly fashion so you’re likely to see kitchenware being sold next to fresh vegetables during your visit.
The food court is located on the ground floor. There are plenty of food stalls surrounding the dining section, which comprises plastic tables and chairs that can accommodate about 200 people. The best time to visit is between 08:00 and 11:00 as you can enjoy authentic Vietnamese dishes such as pho, banh khoai (stuffed omelette), and fresh spring rolls for breakfast.
Dong Ba Market is one of the few shopping venues in Hue, attracting tourists looking to experience the local lifestyle and shop for souvenirs and street food. There’s a bus station in Dong Ba Market, but you can also make your way here via cyclo or motorcycle.

  • Opening Hours: Daily 03:00 – 20:00

Nha Trang Market

When it comes to street markets in the popular coastal town, Nha Trang Market is hailed as the busiest of its kind. Open as early as 04:00 until 18:00 every day, local craftsmen, farmers and fishermen gather to sell an extensive array of handmade clothes, trinkets, seafood, fresh produce, and packaged goods to locals and tourists.
Trading since 1974, Nha Trang Market’s bustling atmosphere and colourful array of goods makes it a popular spot for travelling photographers and tourists looking to immerse themselves in the local culture.
Also known as Dam Market, it takes place within a three-storey building with designated sections that makes it easy to navigate. Local souvenir shops are set in the front and middle sections while meat and fish stalls are located at the back. A staple in any coastal town in Vietnam is dried seafood delicacies, and you can find vacuum-sealed shrimp, seaweed, and cuttlefish at the right of the building.
You can also see numerous stalls selling counterfeit goods such as handbags, watches, sneakers and knock-off branded clothing, though most of them have the same stock. Bargaining for souvenirs is a must if you want anything approaching a fair price. This is generally the case for markets popular with tourists in Vietnam, and throughout most of Southeast Asia.
Nha Trang Market also hosts numerous food stalls, where you can enjoy popular Vietnamese dishes such as banh cuon (rolled cakes), banh xeo (crispy pancake), pho noodles, and bun cha sua (rice vermicelli with fish and jellyfish).
As with any crowded tourist attraction around the world, be aware of your belongings to avoid getting pickpocketed. However, this lively street market is a fascinating place to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Located in Van Thanh, Nha Trang Market is accessible within a 10-minute walk from the Alexandre Yersin Museum via Tran Phu Street and a five-minute drive from Long Son Pagoda in Nha Trang City.

The Best Places to Shopping in Halong bay

Though there are limited options for shopping in Halong Bay, what is actually available can be very interesting. Try the night market at Bai Chay Town. It is set up with many small open-air stalls with good collections of Vietnamese products includes the famous traditional Vietnamese silk dress (ao dai), lacquerware, chopsticks, trinkets, ceramic tea sets, Vietnamese conical hats (nón lá) and dolls. Experienced shoppers recommend bargaining hard to 30-50% of the original offered price. Most shops accept US Dollars as well as the local currency, Dong.

Another fun way of shopping is from small floating shops. Local people row boats filled with goods such as beer, vodka, cigarettes, potato chips, cookies and other snacks. Their small boats are usually laden with goods in a very organised way and even if you’re not buying anything these vessels are fascinating to see and photograph.

It is important for shoppers not to encourage vendors selling stalagmites and stalactites as they should stay where they belong – inside Halong’s caves and grottos.
