Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. It extends over approximately 400 square kilometres and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes. For several centuries Angkor, was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom. With impressive monuments, several different ancient urban plans and large water reservoirs, the site is a unique concentration of features testifying to an exceptional civilization. Temples such as Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, exemplars of Khmer architecture, are closely linked to their geographical context as well as being imbued with symbolic significance. The architecture and layout of the successive capitals bear witness to a high level of social order and ranking within the Khmer Empire. Angkor is therefore a major site exemplifying cultural, religious and symbolic values, as well as containing high architectural, archaeological and artistic significance.<br \/>\nThe park is inhabited, and many villages, some of whom the ancestors are dating back to the Angkor period are scattered throughout the park. The population practices agriculture and more specifically rice cultivation.<br \/>\n<strong>Criterion (i):\u00a0<\/strong>The Angkor complex represents the entire range of Khmer art from the 9th to the 14th centuries, and includes a number of indisputable artistic masterpieces (e.g. Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Banteay Srei).<br \/>\n<strong>Criterion (ii):<\/strong>\u00a0The influence of Khmer art as developed at Angkor was a profound one over much of South-east Asia and played a fundamental role in its distinctive evolution.<br \/>\n<strong>Criterion (iii):<\/strong>\u00a0The Khmer Empire of the 9th-14th centuries encompassed much of South-east Asia and played a formative role in the political and cultural development of the region. All that remains of that civilization is its rich heritage of cult structures in brick and stone.<br \/>\n<strong>Criterion (iv):<\/strong>\u00a0Khmer architecture evolved largely from that of the Indian sub-continent, from which it soon became clearly distinct as it developed its own special characteristics, some independently evolved and others acquired from neighboring cultural traditions. The Temple is composed of a series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavements and staircases over an 800 metre long axis and dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. Nevertheless, its complex history can be traced to the 9th century, when the hermitage was founded. This site is particularly well preserved, mainly due to its remote location. It is very \u2018pure\u2019 both in plan and in the detail of its decoration.<br \/>\nAuthenticity, in terms of the way the buildings and their materials express well the values of the property, has been established. The attributes of the property comprise the temple complex; the integrity of the property has to a degree been compromised by the absence of part of the promontory from the perimeter of the property. The protective measures for the Temple, in terms of legal protection are adequate; the progress made in defining the parameters of the Management Plan needs to be consolidated into an approved, full Management Plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, Archaeological Site of Ancient Ishanapura<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18146\" src=\"https:\/\/attravel.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"12\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Cambodia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>N12 52 21 E105 2 35<\/li>\n<li><strong>Date of Inscription:<\/strong>\u00a02017<\/li>\n<li><strong>Criteria:\u00a0<\/strong>(ii)(iii)(vi)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Property :<\/strong>\u00a0840.03 ha<\/li>\n<li><strong>Buffer zone:<\/strong>\u00a02,523.6 ha<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ref:<\/strong>\u00a01532<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, Archaeological Site of Ancient Ishanapura<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The archaeological site of Sambor Prei Kuk, \u201cthe temple in the richness of the forest\u201d in the Khmer language, has been identified as Ishanapura, the capital of the Chenla Empire that flourished in the late 6th and early 7th centuries AD. The property comprises more than a hundred temples, ten of which are octagonal, unique specimens of their genre in South-East Asia. Decorated sandstone elements in the site are characteristic of the pre-Angkor decorative idiom, known as the Sambor Prei Kuk Style. Some of these elements, including lintels, pediments and colonnades, are true masterpieces.
