Inle Lake Overview

Inle Lake is Myanmar's second largest lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of middle Myanmar's Shan Plateau. This highland freshwater lake, with 13.5 miles long and 7 miles wide is densely inhabited by many different tribes, whose daily lives are based entirely on the water. As there is no roads or sidewalks, the locals get around in one-person-wide wooden boats. The lake itself is attractive; what makes it more extraordinary are its communities, ecology, and traditions. It is quite different from any other tourist spot in Myanmar.

Floating villages and one-leg rowing fishermen are the two iconic scenes of Inle Lake. Single- and two-story wooden stilt houses rise above the water. Local fishermen work at the lake, using a distinctive one-legged paddling technique you won't see anywhere else in the world. A vacation to Inle Lake will certainly be one steeped in the vast and diverse traditional culture of Myanmar. When planning a trip to Myanmar make sure to spend a few days in Inle Lake.
